Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as the first female president in Mexico's history. Running as the candidate for the ruling left-wing party in this year's presidential election, she secured a decisive victory on Sunday, ensuring the party remains in power for another term.

At 61 years old, Sheinbaum is the former mayor of Mexico City and has been involved in left-wing politics from the start. She considers the outgoing president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, her mentor. However, Mexicans are eager to see how she will distinguish herself from Obrador once in office.Claudia Sheinbaum is a scientist with a PhD in Energy Engineering and a background in climatology. Her brother is a physicist. In a 2023 interview with the Associated Press (AP), Sheinbaum stated, "I believe in science."

Observers note that Sheinbaum's scientific background has influenced her political career. As mayor of Mexico City during the COVID-19 pandemic, she implemented measures that differed significantly from those of President Obrador. While the central government downplayed the importance of widespread testing, Sheinbaum expanded testing efforts in the capital. She also restricted business hours to curb the virus's spread.

President Obrador, concerned about the economic impact, avoided measures that might hurt the economy and often appeared in public without a mask. In contrast, Sheinbaum was diligent about wearing a mask and encouraging social distancing to prevent infections.Claudia Sheinbaum will assume office as president on October 1. Among the significant challenges she will face is the ongoing violence in Mexico. During her election campaign, Sheinbaum stated that she would expand the security forces established by President Obrador to combat crime.

"To be clear, this doesn't mean the government is going to crack down on everything or start a war or become authoritarian," Sheinbaum said about addressing criminal gangs. "We will work on strategies to find the root cause of crime and move towards zero impunity after crime."

Sheinbaum has always admired President Obrador. She has criticized the neoliberal economy for contributing to the poverty of millions in the country and has praised Mexico's state-owned oil company, Pemex. Additionally, she has promised to prioritize environmentally friendly energy.
