The attacker publicly assaulted Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Two eyewitnesses, who were sitting next to a fountain at the time, described the attack and the assailant.


The incident occurred on a street in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, on Friday local time.

Mary Adrian and Anna Ravon, who spoke to the Danish newspaper BT, reported that the attacker approached from the opposite direction and struck Frederiksen on the shoulder. According to the witnesses, the man tried to forcefully confront Frederiksen. Following the attack, the Prime Minister was swiftly removed from the scene and taken to a nearby cafe where she sat down.

They also noted that the assailant was quite tall and of light build. After the attack, the man attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. Security personnel swiftly subdued and arrested him.

The Danish Prime Minister's Office confirmed the attack in a statement. European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen immediately condemned the "attack."

This incident occurred on the eve of the European Union elections.Denmark's TV2 reported that Mette Frederiksen had been participating in an election campaign with her party's Social Democrat candidate Christel Schaldemose for the EU elections before the attack.

The motive behind the attack on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is under investigation, according to the police, who declined to provide further details. "An attacker has been arrested," Copenhagen police stated in a message on X. The investigation is ongoing.
